Helping the Homeless

Within a month’s time, a homeless shelter will have seen and helped hundreds of people. While many are generous enough to donate food and clothes, other comforting items often get overlooked.

Linens of Love was created to fulfill that need. Our mission is to lovingly provide linens and toiletries to those in need at our community shelters and service organizations dedicated to helping the homeless, veterans, and families.

Since becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2015, the list of organizations we help has grown. We now serve a total of seven organizations in the New Haven, CT region. These organizations service homeless men, women, children, and veterans. In addition, some service those transitioning out of homelessness and those at risk of becoming homeless. In 2019, we partnered with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) in New Haven to help support families who are being reunited or transitioning out of homelessness and are moving into a new home!

Linens of Love, Inc. was founded by Mary B. Pursell in 2015. Mary and her daughter had been providing dinners once a week to homeless men at shelters in New Haven. They noticed that many of the beds did not have sheets, blankets, or even pillows. In addition, they received many requests for toothbrushes, deodorant, and soap from the residents. This experience had a lasting impact on them so Mary explored if there was truly a need for these items at surrounding community shelters. With the help of her childhood friend, Kathleen F. Marinaccio, the motion to formalize Linens of Love, Inc. completed in 2015.
