New Haven, CT—Local students from East Haven High School, Daniel Hand High School, and Southern Connecticut State University held a Stuff-A-Pillowcase drive at their respective schools in efforts to collect toiletries for homeless in the area.  Hundreds of items were collected that included toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, body wash, shampoo, safety razors, shaving cream, deodorant, and much more.

To achieve this generous task, the students worked with Linens of Love, Inc., a non-profit organization based in New Haven, CT, that helps supply local homeless shelters with basic toiletries and new or gently used linens, such as bed sets, sheets, blankets, and pillows.

The organizers of the drives were Nicholas Vessicchio, East Haven High School, Jillian Kottage, Daniel Hand High School, and Huma Khalid, Southern Connecticut State University. The donors at the high school consisted of students and faculty, while at SCSU the donors belonged to the following Greek organizations: Alpha Sigma Alpha, Beta Mu Sigma, Delta Phi Epsilon, and Omega Zeta Pi.

Huma Khalid, Greek Life Council President said, “Community service and activism is a pivotal aspect of Greek life. Linens of Love gave us the opportunity to help those we may not able to help on a regular basis by giving them things that we wouldn’t normally think twice about. Soap, shampoo, and toothpaste are items we pay little mind to because we never feel their absence, but to someone that has nothing, it means the world.”

Once students collected the items, they packaged them into colorful pillowcases and tied them off with bows to present as gifts to the shelters. The recipients of the generous donations were New Reach Life Haven, a shelter that assists women and children experiencing financial and domestic hardships and the VA Connecticut Errera Community Care Center, which helps place distressed veterans in homes.

Linens of Love , Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded by Abbate Insurance Associates, Inc. in 2015. Its mission is to lovingly provide linens and toiletries to homeless shelters and service organizations dedicated to helping homeless veterans, men, women, and children.
